Nazrina Rodjan’s first solo exhibition, KALA PANI 1873-2023, reworks postcard images of indentured Indian women in the nineteenth and twentieth century. The artist creates portraits that imagine her ancestral connection to these women. She plays with the colours and gestures in these postcards so that indentured Indian women are not reduced to their labour, their race, or their physical adornments. If these women were asked to speak, then what could they tell us about their relationship to each other, to femininity, to their own desires? Rodjan’s oil paintings ask these questions by sifting through the everyday experiences, struggles and joys of Indentured Indian women that remain hidden in archival sources.
